What is a TFI Leap Card?
When studying in Ireland, we recommend getting a TFI Leap Card as you can use one to access most, if not all, public transportation regardless of where you are based. A TFL Leap Card is a prepaid travel card that is easiest in paying for fares on public transportation around Ireland. It is valid on most TFI services and commercial bus operators.
How do I use my TFI Leap Card?
Your TFI Leap Card can be physical or digital (via the app in your phone) and only requires a touch-on and touch-off at the ticket validator machine on entering or exiting the station. Once credit is low on your card, you can top it up at any Post Point (An Post) agent or at the ticket machines at Luas, Dart and Rail stations or with the Leap Top-Up App. Simply type-in the amount of credit you want to add to your card then hold your card against the pay terminal or your phone (if using the Leap Top-Up App).
How much does a TFI Leap Card cost?
Buying a TFI Leap Card costs €5 plus a minimum travel credit of €5. You can apply for one here ()
What are the benefits of having a TFI Leap Card?
- It is convenient in that you are not required to pay by cash or queue at ticket machines. Topping-up your card ensures seamless travel.
- A TFI Leap Card tends to save you up to 30% on fares compared to cash single fares.
- As a regular Leap Card traveller, you will benefit from the fare-capping system which is a cap on how much you can spend to travel in a day or a week depending on the operator you use. For example, if using Dublin Bus, your fare cap is set at €2.80 per day and €11.00 per week. That means you once you hit those fares, you will be allowed to travel for free for the rest of the day or the week, respectively.
